Kickstarter for Ouya makes us go "booya!"

Why is this important?

Just this week we ran a 5 on the best tech-based Kickstarters, and then this shows up. It's big news: an Android-powered console that plugs into your TV, runs on tablet hardware, and has free games.

The lowdown...

Kickstarter's seen some great projects with sometimes modest goals, but this one's going for broke.
The initial $950 000 goal is not really chump change, but the Ouya, an Android gaming console for your TV, is no small project. It's not just a hardware project, either: the minds behind it are encouraging a free-to-play model that brings more gaming goodness to the table so that people don't have to spend money to get started.
Since it's based on Android, and the project is community-funded, it's really the first open source games console. The specifications for the hardware are already out in the open, on the Kickstarter page, and the designers are pledging to have a controller that's a "love letter to console gaming". Simply put, this sounds like it'll be everything gamers want.
Funding for the project has already gone through the roof. The $950 000 goal was reached in 12 hours, and now, less than a day later, it's sitting at $2.4-million. With 28 days to go, this might break many more records yet, and hopefully end up being a kickass piece of kit.
