BlackBerry Z10 pictures leak

Why is this important?

RIM’s last shot at global success looks like it might have hit the mark.

The lowdown...

New images of Research in Motion’s forthcoming BlackBerry Z10 handset have leaked online, ahead of a January 30th launch for the phone and version 10 of the BlackBerry operating system that the company hopes will stave off competition from Android and Google. And the early verdict is... it looks good.

The new handset eschews the traditional physical keyboard popular with BlackBerry owners in favour of a pure touchscreen design similar to that of the iPhone or Galaxy S3. It appears to have a 4.3inch screen, not entirely dissimilar to the iPhone 5, and a solid rubberised build quality that should go down well in hot, dusty countries with climates that tend to trash more delicate rivals.

One interesting discovery is the appearance of an HDMI port, suggesting RIM is going to target movies on demand and throwing pictures from phone to big screen.

Given that BlackBerry remains the most popular smartphone brand in South Africa, accounting for almost a fifth of all phone’s sold, it may come as some surprise to know that internationally, the company has taken a drubbing in recent years at the hands of Google and Apple. Worldwide, BlackBerries once accounted for 43% of all smartphones sold; now they make up exactly a tenth of that (4.3%). If the new handset - also known as the BlackBerry London - and BB10 OS can turn the company’s fortunes around it’ll be one of the most incredible comebacks ever.
